WED SEPT 29: THE VAMPIRES

THE VAMPIRES are quickly becoming an icon on the Australian jazz scene with their unique blend of soulful jazz, old-school reggae and South American music.

Featuring compositions by saxophonist Jeremy Rose (2009 Bell Award Winner for Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year) and trumpeter Nick Garbett, their powerful melodic invention and use of surprising grooves sets them apart. Their first CD South Coasting (Jazzgroove) has been hailed as a fresh sound, and has led them to appear at major festivals around Australia including the 2009 Wangaratta Festival of Jazz, The 2009 Melbourne International Jazz Festival and the 2010 JazzGroove Futures Festival.

Their new CD Chellowdene (Earshift Records) was launched March 2010 and has been met with critical acclaim, including two 4/5 star reviews from major critics. The Vampires will be touring nationally in August and September.

Catch them at HIPPO on Wednesday September 29th as part of the Hippo Live series.

"Played with verve, high ability and inspiration, The Vampires have produced another distinguished album."
**** 4/5 stars
The Australian, Roger Mitchell

"Were the Vampires a drink they'd be a fizzy one. Not only is there refreshing air around every note, but this air seems to be rising… The sounds and lines of Jeremy Rose and Nick Garbett are ideally matched in their ability to interweave cheerfulness and fragility.."
**** 4/5 stars

Wanting to be a musician in a working class family in Panama, is not what parents are expecting for their children. BRUJO GORDON was one of those kids who asked if it was possible to make a living doing music. Fast forward to the present, and now Brujo's a renknowned connoisseur of international urban music, reggae and reggaeton, retro salsa, alter latin, afro pop and the whole world music genre.

CHEESE has played alongside the likes of The Bloody Beetroots, Boys Noize, Steve Aoki, Afrojack, The Proxy, and Sam La More.
His desire to stand out sees him taking risks and experimenting both with his tunes and his technical skills on the decks. His sets are fun filled with disco to bouncy tech house playing anything from the latest soontobehuge, sought out underground to the forgotten classic or characteristic Cheese bootleg.

The Crunch

THE CRUNCH grew up in North West UK and started spinning records in 1999 during his university days in Liverpool and Manchester and moved to Australia in 2007. An all rounder DJ with a passion for many styles of electronic music, having supported such acts as London Elektricity and The Nextmen. Every little while sees The Crunch dish up some Voodoo for Hippo, a night of high class, soulful drum n bass for the beat conscious connoisseur.

DJ D'Opus

D'OPUS has been a firm figure in the DJ scene for a good decade now, which has seen him play in support of such fine hip hop luminaries as Jungle Brothers, DJ Q-Bert, Mr. Thing and De La Soul. Whilst not behind the turntables, he's the production part of hip hop duo D'Opus & Roshambo. D'Opus plays a mix of deep hip hop and funk grooves, with that essential twist of turntablism.

Downtown Brown

DOWNTOWN BROWN has been on the pro DJ circuit in Sydney & Canberra for more than 10 years. Far from hanging up his headphones, his early days consist of MCing alongside the likes of The Prodigy, Slipmatt and Ultrasonic, and supporting for The Freestylers, Cut La Roc, Laidback, Jon Stapleton, DJ Q, Stacey Pullen and Matthew Herbert. These days he's mainly up in Sydney, playing esteemed venues such as Opera Bar and Tonic, and you'll see him sharing NYC classics at Sounds From The Loft once a month.

Rumoured to hail from the South Bronx and having played an essential role in the birth of modern hip hop, FAUX REAL now takes listeners at Hippo on an auditory tour, with sounds leaning towards the new and groovy (think Quantic), and then hits it up hard and real on that urban front (think Burial).

Jemist

JEMIST has been on the music tip for quite a while, and has spent the last five years dishing out an obsessive music compulsion through the turntables, seeing him support the likes of Kid Koala, Z-Trip, and DJ Krush. At Hippo, he puts together Dusty Grooves, a night of hard earned Northern Soul 45s, modern deep funk, and groovy jazz. Namecheck CTI, Fania, Stax, Kay Dee, Motown, and then some.
